Not by protein alone
The grain industry has a message for the legions of low carb dieters: “Bread. It’s essential.’”
Atkins, the low-carb craze leader, calls for dieters to give up breads almost entirely and instead chow down on such things as steaks and bacon. The South Beach Diet also calls for a severe reduction in breads and cereals.
The diets are based on the idea that high carbohydrate foods rapidly raise blood sugar, which then drops and makes the consumer feel hungry. Conversely, proteins and vegetables raise blood sugar more slowly.
But there is intense debate about the premise of the diets and their long-term effectiveness.
Literature shows that grain-based foods, including breads and rolls, offer many health benefits. Grains aren’t the cause of the country’s obesity problem, according to these experts. Rather, Americans are eating too much.
