Questions to ask when buying a Medical Alarm

There are a number of questions you should ask before purchasing a medical alarm to ensure you end up with the right one for your requirements. Depending on what you need they can differ drastically in terms of price, service and how they work.

When deciding on which medical alarm to purchase, take a look at the company that is offering the product and what services they provide. How reliable is the equipment? Is there 24 hour assistance? How quickly will they respond?

You’ll also want to ask if the console has a rechargeable battery and whether the console is attached to your existing phone line. Also check what happens if the phone is busy during an emergency. Is the wireless transmitter waterproof and can you wear it in the bath or shower? What is the distance between the transmitter and the console before the signal drops out? Are there any additional costs, including any monthly service charges, setup or termination fees?

You may also want to know how the response team has been trained for and any equipment they may use in the case of an emergency for your own peace of mind.

Emergency medical technician launches Medical Alarm FAQ

As an emergency services technician, Ron Dermer has responded to dozens of medical alarm calls. No one knows the value of these systems better than those who arrive in time to save a life thanks to a medical alarm.

Because of his experiences with these life saving devices, Ron found that many owners of alarms simply don’t understand all the features their systems offer and began a medical alarm blog, http://medicalalarm.ebloggy.com, to help.

That was a good start, but now Ron is getting many questions from prospective medical alarm purchasers who want more information before committing to a monitoring service. To satisfy the needs of prospective alarm owners, Ron has introduced the Medical Alarm FAQ, http://medical-alarm-faq.atspace.com/.

The Medical Alarm FAQ provides answers to the most common questions and offers valuable insight into how medical alarms work and considerations when making a purchase. The FAQ introduces consumers to medical alarms, explains what a medical alarm is and what a medical alarm is not. It provides detailed information about wireless “panic buttons” and the console units that connect alarm owners to life saving monitoring personnel.

The FAQ isn’t entirely dry reading. Ron has included valuable tips on things to look for in a system and suggests important questions for consumers to ask when shopping for a medical alarm.

Between his Medical Alarm Facts blog and the Medical Alarm FAQ, Ron hopes to cultivate a more educated public and more medical alarm owners. Ron says, “You only have to respond to one call where a few minutes might have made the difference between life and death to realize the incredible value of these devices”.

The initial text of the FAQ leans toward information about the Linear system offered by Medical Alarm Services, http://www.medical-alarm-services.com and the popular LifeLine Systems service, http://www.lifelinesys.com/. However, Ron hopes suppliers of other systems with unique features will provide him with information for the FAQ to ensure a truly balanced and information source for consumers.

Lifeline Medical Alarm Users Reported Ten Times Less Likely to Live in Long-Term Care Facility

Senior citizens experience greater sense of confidence and peace of mind, enabling independent living with Lifeline Personal Medical Alarm

Lifeline Systems, the company that first invented the personal medical alarm 30 years ago, and which today helps over 400,000 senior citizens or disabled people to age with dignity and enable independent living in their own homes today announced that a study funded by the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare found that subscribing to the Lifeline personal medical alarm system reduced seniors” fear of being incapacitated and unable to get help in the event of a fall or other situation. In addition, this greater sense of confidence and peace of mind also encouraged family and caregivers to support the senior”s wishes to continue to independent living at home. The report concludes that as a result, Lifeline subscribers are 10 times less likely to be institutionalized in a long-term care facility.

Two additional reports (Koch, 1984; Dibner, 1992) also determined that Lifeline subscribers had a 26% decrease in hospital admissions and a 23% decrease in length of stay. It is believed that early intervention and the heightened feelings of security reported by patients and caregivers were significant factors in reduced hospital usage.

“It’s my clinical impression that when individuals at risk are given Lifeline Medical Alarms, their mobility actually seems to improve”, says Dr. Rein Tideiksaar, PhD, ElderCare Senior Vice President for Program Development, Fall Prevention and Injury Reduction Systems. “If they feel better about themselves within their homes, if they’re walking around more, if they’re increasing lower extremity strength — that should increase mobility and decrease fall risk.”

Lifeline is proud to be the preferred provider of personal response services to members of the Visiting Nurse Associations of America, and to thousands of leading hospitals across the country. In addition, the Lifeline Medical Alarm service is also available through select chapters of the American Red Cross.

The service costs little more than a dollar a day, there are no hidden costs, no long-term contracts, and subscribers may discontinue the service at any time.

Barton throws out more Lifelines Foundation helps buy 24 emergency contact systems

The Barton Foundation, a fund-raising branch of the Barton Hospital Foundation, recently spent $6,500 to purchase 24 upgraded Lifeline units. Lifeline is a national medical alarm service that can be activated with a button worn on the wrist or around the neck.

A small speaker is also involved. It gets placed in a central location within the home. Once the Lifeline button is activated, an operator at a response center in Citrus Heights will contact the person who needs help through the speaker. If there’s no response, the operator will turn up the volume. If there is still no response, 911 is called.

If the person can communicate, the operator will ask if they need immediate medical attention or if they want someone on their responder list, such as a neighbor or a friend, to be contacted.

LifeGuardian Medical Alarm Announces New 1500′ Home Medical Alarm System

Most home medical alarms have a typical range of 100-300 feet between the call-for-help button and the base console. LifeGuardian Medical Alarm now offers an optional long range call button that provides 1500 feet of protection. Perfect for protecting seniors living large homes, properties or homes/condos with many floors.

LifeGuardian™ Medical alarm Systems announced today their new long range medical alert call-for-help button.

“With a manufacturer rating of 1500 feet, no other medical alarm system available today offers longer range or better protection.” states Thomas Franks, President and CEO of Clayton Communications, Inc., “This industry-leading performance is evidence of the superior quality a LifeGuardian™ Medical Alarm System.

Recent advances in wireless “two way voice” and medical alarm technologies are providing improved peace of mind for not only senior citizens and shut-ins, but their loved ones as well.

“The patented new LifeGuardian™ two-way voice Medical Alarm System provides unmatched convenience, longest range and security.” he says. “When a subscriber experiences a medical emergency in or around the house and cannot reach a phone, he or she has only to press a small waterproof button on a neck pendant or wristband and the LifeGuardian™ medical alert monitoring company operator receives the call and activates the ‘two way’ voice feature.

“This puts the subscriber in direct voice contact with an operator using a speaker/microphone built into the alarm panel which can be heard from anywhere in the home. If the victim has fallen and cannot get up, for example, the operator immediately dispatches local medical personnel to the home, all the while reassuring the victim that help is on the way by maintaining voice dialogue through the alarm panel. The built-in microphone is very sensitive, and can pick up even a whisper from anywhere within a 2500 square foot home,” Franks says.

An optional system feature is the wireless smoke detector. Unlike self-installed smoke detectors that will melt to the floor before notifying anyone, The LifeGuardian™ Medical Alarm System loudly announces “FIRE..FIRE” and immediately notifies the monitoring center of the fire and smoke. If no response is heard from the home, the monitoring center will immediately dispatch the fire department.

“The LifeGuardian™ Medical Alarm System is the first system of its type designed to be set-up by the user or their family.” Franks says. “The system comes ready to plug and test. Typically, set-up takes just a few minutes. When a subscriber signs-up with LifeGuardian, they print out the New Subscriber form right off of the LifeGuardian web site. They complete a two page confidential information form and FAX it back to the LifeGuardian Medical Alarm center. LifeGuardian™ technicians pre-program and test each system, sets-up the subscribers account with the monitoring center and ships the new system to the subscriber anywhere in the United States and Canada. The LifeGuardian™ Quick Set-up Guide assures trouble free hook-up and provides free technical support if there is a problem.

“The result is that seniors like Phyllis can enjoy living independently with the peace of mind that comes from knowing that they are no longer really alone, even if they live alone,” he concluded. “It also provides family members with a new sense of peace of mind knowing their loved one is safe and secure.”

Franks cautions “Don’t wait until your senior family member has a bad fall to consider such an obvious safety measure. If they are over the age of 75 and living alone, statistically they are at risk of a serious accident. Prior falls, medications and medical conditions dramatically increase the likelihood of another major accident.”

One medical alarm industry study determined that seniors who have a medical alarm system stay independent and at home an average of seven years longer! When one considers that assisted living facilities may cost $125/day and skilled nursing facilities even more, a LifeGuardian™ Medical Alarms system becomes a wise investment.

The LifeGuardian™ Medical Alarm System comes complete for just $39.95/month and a one-time activation fee of only $49.95. It includes a lifetime equipment warranty and a 30 day unconditional satisfaction guarantee. Best of all, no multi-year or annual contract is required. For more information visit www.lifeguardianmedicalalertsystems.com or call the LifeGuardian™ Medical Alarm sales office at 800-378-2957 open 8am-4pm M-F PST.
