The National Cholesterol Education Program Diet vs a Diet Lower in Carbohydrates and Higher in Protein and Monounsaturated Fat

Study Findings:

The MLC diet, which is lower in total carbohydrates but higher in complex carbohydrates, protein, and monounsaturated fat, caused significantly greater weight loss over 12 weeks compared with the NCEP diet.

Girls on a high-calcium diet gain weight at the same rate as girls on a normal diet

Study Findings:

Onions may help fight colon cancer

Study Findings:

Onions slowed the growth of colon cancer cells in test tubes.
Strong onions had the most anti-cancer power and sweet onions had the smallest impact - strong onions tend to have higher antioxidant content.

Diabetes linked with cancer

Study Findings:

Diabetic men were 3x more likely to develop liver cancer and 2x as likely to develop pancreatic cancer compared with healthy subjects

Dairy intakes affect bone density in the elderly

Study Findings:

Elderly men who consume more dairy products have stronger bones.
Higher consumption of dairy foods was associated with greater bone mineral density at the hip and upper thigh bone for men, but the relationship between dairy consumption and bone strength was not significant for women.

MRI scan more effective than CT scan at diagnosing stroke

Study Findings:

MRI detected hemorrhages not seen on CT scans

Method:
Researchers from about 200 stroke patients for more than two years. They performed both types of scans to see if MRI was as good as CT at detecting hemorrhages - bleeding in the brain.
