Diet soft drink linked to obesity

The review of eight years of patient data found that people who drink diet soft drinks were more likely to become overweight.

“On average, for each diet soft drink our participants drank per day, they were 65% more likely to become overweight during the next seven to eight years, and 41% more likely to become obese,” said Fowler, who admits she was surprised by her own findings.

“I was expecting to see that drinking regular soft drinks increased the risk of becoming overweight or obese – and that did seem to be the case early on. But it didn’t matter whether people were drinking diet or regular soft drinks: drinking sodas of any kind seemed to increase the risk of weight gain.”

Drinking any soda — regular or diet — was linked to a higher risk of becoming overweight. But when the researchers analyzed the data, they found that regular soft drinks had very little connection with serious weight gain. Diet drinks, however, did.

The researchers say their findings are not proof that drinking diet soft drinks causes people to become overweight. It could be that as they began gaining weight, they switched from regular to diet drinks. Read more »
