Epivir (3TC) effective in treating hepatitis B
Study Findings:
- Epivir, a long-used anti-HIV drug, appears to be the first effective long-term treatment for patients with advanced liver disease caused by hepatitis B virus.
- Researchers found Epivir (3TC) halved the risk of liver failure and the chance the disease would develop into liver cancer.
- Of those who received Epivir, about 8% saw their liver disease get worse, compared with 18% of those given a placebo.
