Infants benefit from reconstituted blood during surgery
Study Findings:
- Using reconstituted blood during heart surgery in infants is better than using fresh whole blood.
- Infants who underwent open-heart surgery using reconstituted blood - packed red cells and fresh-frozen plasma that are mixed in the operating room just before use - were discharged from the intensive care unit 25% more quickly and spent 31% less time on mechanical ventilation
