Traffic and heart attacks linked

Study Findings:

  • Transient exposure to traffic may increase the risk of heart attacks in susceptible persons.
  • An association was found between exposure to traffic and the onset of a heart attack within one hour afterward. The time the subjects spent in cars, on public transportation, or on motorcycles or bicycles was consistently linked with an increase in the risk of myocardial infarction.
  • The overall risk of having a heart attack after being in traffic is still very low (8%). Many things can trigger heart attacks in people with underlying cardiovascular disease, including strenuous exercise, anger and drug use.

Method:

Data from 691 people in Germany who has a heart attack. Data on subjects’ activities during the four days preceding the onset of symptoms were collected with the use of patient diaries.
