Pensioners cutting back on food to pay council tax
‘MOST pensioners are having to cut their budgets for food, clothing and heating to afford the increasing burden of council tax bills, according to a report published yesterday.
Help the Aged claimed that hundreds of thousands of Scottish pensioners were likely to be living in “council tax poverty”. The charity said 70 per cent of those who took part in the survey of 1,000 people fell into that category, as their bills accounted for more than 10 per cent of their income, and more than half said they had been forced to cut their budgets for essentials such as food and heating to afford tax rises.’
