Scammers Dupe Online Daters for Millions Of Dollars

‘The most popular complaint among women about online dating sites — that men turn out to be nothing like their profiles, and only jerk women around — is also true the other way around.

Not just in matters of love, but of wallets, too. Slightly less than 1 of every 10 profiles on popular dating sites are fake, often the work of Russian escort services and Nigerian scam artists, according to one industry analyst.

Markus Frind, chief executive of Plentyoffish Media Inc., estimates that scammers operating on Internet dating sites steal at least $100 million a year. Those performing a ruse could be women in Russia, supposedly husband hunting, asking for money to leave their country; or a Nigerian sending “business proposition” emails to solicit help claiming his millions socked away in foreign banks.’
