Pope greets fellow Bavarian soccer star, says he’ll be watching ‘06 World Cup
‘Franz Beckenbauer, one of Germany’s most accomplished and well known soccer players ever, was able to meet Benedict XVI and said afterward: “This was one of the most moving moments of my life.”
Beckenbauer, president of the German Organizing Committee of the 2006 Soccer World Cup, was in Rome on a welcoming tour to the 31 countries that have qualified, along with Germany as host, for a place in this championship.
Beckenbauer, known as the “Kaiser” of German football, has already been to Tehran, Riyadh, Seoul and Tokyo and hopes to have visited all 31 countries by February 2006.’
